30 years of Grisebach - Museum offer for the anniversary

16.11.2016, Berlin

Berlin, 16 November 2016: To mark its thirtieth anniversary, Grisebach is presenting the largest offering in its history to date: Works of art with an average estimated value of 29 million euros will be auctioned in Berlin from 30 November to 3 December.

Several outstanding German Expressionist paintings are at the top of the offerings, including two large-format flower gardens and a seascape by Emil Nolde (between € 800,000 and € 1,000,000) and a rare early still life by Max Beckmann from the 1920s (€ 700,000/1,000,000). Elisabeth Gerhardt, August Macke's partner and muse, inspired the artist to create three works that will be sold in the Grisebach auction, including the "Naked Girl with a Red Flower" from 1911 (€ 700,000/900,000).

An icon of New Objectivity is Anton Räderscheidt's "House No. 9" from 1921, which was exhibited at the legendary and eponymous exhibition in Mannheim in 1925 (€ 350,000/450,000).

Bauhaus artists are represented by two paintings by Lyonel Feininger, including the spectacular composition "Gelbe Gasse" from 1932 (€ 1,000,000/ 1,500,000) and "Burg auf dem Riff" by Paul Klee, 1927 (€ 500,000/ 700,000).

The offer, which ranges from four paintings by Max Liebermann, including an impressive, life-size self-portrait (€ 300,000/400,000) and a "Restoration Garden in Leiden" (€ 500,000/700,000) to three paintings by the South American artist Fernando Botero, emphatically emphasises Grisebach's position as market leader in the field of modernism in Germany. With two works by René Magritte and a painting by Ben Nicholson, the offer this time also has an international focus.

Grisebach can also present the most valuable offer in its history in the "Contemporary Art" section. Here, two important works of American Pop Art are attracting international interest: Andy Warhol's famous portrait of Joseph Beuys (€ 400,000/600,000) and Robert Indiana's legendary sculpture "LOVE" (€ 300,000/400,000). The German ZERO movement is represented by an early white grid painting by Otto Piene, which was begun in 1957 (€ 250,000/350,000) and a large, spectacular two-part nail relief by Günther Uecker "Gespaltenes Feld" (€ 400,000/600,000).

Bernd Schultz: "I am delighted that we have been entrusted with such an outstanding collection of exceptional works of art for our anniversary, which is already provoking enthusiastic reactions from home and abroad."
