The portrait shows the actress and later jazz photographer Stephanie Wiesand. Nolde met her in 1947 during a holiday in St. Peter-Ording. Impressed by her, he produced three watercolour portraits, one of which he gave her as a gift in 1949. He had previously written to her about them in a letter: "Zwei der Bilder sind hier angeheftet im Rahmen, lebendig frisch u. Leuchtend wirkend. Am Profilbild malte ich ein wenig, es ist so gut wie die anderen auch.".
