On Wednesday, 1 June, over 230 lots of modern and contemporary photography will be auctioned at Grisebach in Berlin.
Among the rarities on the auction market are vintage prints by Gertrud Arndt, Edward Steichen, André Kertész and Iwao Yamawaki, among others. Gertrud Arndt's "Negative Portrait of Wera Meyer-Waldeck", innovatively created in 1930 through black and white reversal, is one of the "classics" of Bauhaus photography (€ 10,000/15,000). Absolute precision and concentrated lighting characterise Edward Steichen's study of a sunflower from 1921 (€ 20,000/30,000), while the Hungarian photographer André Kertész discovered unusual moments and encounters in everyday life on his forays through Paris, as in his 1929 photograph of wooden carousel horses (€ 20,000/25,000). Peter Keetman's "Konvolut für Bernd Lohse", which the photographer selected himself in the 1970s and donated to the photojournalist and publicist Bernd Lohse, offers a unique compilation of major works (€ 45,000/55,000). Vintages by Erwin Blumenfeld, Albert Renger-Patzsch, Tata Ronkholz, Otto Steinert, Josef Sudek and Fred Zinnemann, among others, will also be auctioned.
Originally from the collection of Tom Jacobson are rare photographs by the Japanese architect and photographer Iwao Yamawaki, who studied at the Bauhaus in Dessau from 1930-1932. It was during this time that he took his photographs, mainly of modern architecture, which Yamawaki staged in the style of "New Vision" (estimated prices from € 3,000 to € 5,000).
Among the highlights from the field of contemporary photography are four works by Peter Beard, including a portrait of Andy Warhol processed with colour and collage elements (€ 50,000/70,000) and an oversized print of "Large tusker" (€ 20,000/30,000). Also worthy of mention are two Diasec works by Thomas Ruff, an artistic examination of Mies van der Rohe's buildings on Afrikanische Strasse in Berlin-Wedding (€ 22,000/28,000) and a portrait of a young woman (€ 25.000/30,000), as well as the portfolio "Aktion in einem Kreis" by Günter Brus (€ 6,000/8,000) and works by Robert Mapplethorpe, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Deborah Turbeville and others.
