Exhibition Ruth Walz - The whole world is a theatre

02.09.2022, Berlin

Together with guest curator Dr Sarah Hadda, Grisebach is delighted to be showing the exhibition "Ruth Walz - The Whole World is a Theatre" from 16 September on the occasion of the BERLIN ART WEEK.

The photographer Ruth Walz (*1941 in Bremen) documented the unforgettable productions of Peter Stein, Luc Bondy and Robert Wilson, among others, for the Schaubühne Berlin from 1976 to 1990 and has accompanied theatre and opera history as a chronicler for the Salzburg Festival, the Wiener Festwochen and De Nationale Opera Amsterdam to this day. In her photographs, she has been able to capture the ecstatic and passionate soul of post-war German theatre like no other. The central moment of her art, and this is what makes her brilliant, is recognising the beauty of moments. In this way, she shares the incredible happiness of being part of the theatre with the recipients through her pictures. Her admiration, or perhaps even amazement at the work of others, permeates her pictures.

After the major retrospective at the Museum of Photography until February this year, the exhibition "The whole world is a theatre" looks at the work of theatre photographer Ruth Walz with more than 100 photographs. Her work is complemented by selected works by Alexander Camaro. In 1946, one year after the end of the war, the artist created his main work, the 19-part cycle "Wooden Theatre", which, like all his works from this period, focuses on the stage and the theatre and established the painter's position in the post-war artistic milieu. We would like to thank the Foundation for the loans and support!
