About the exhibition "Clouds of None"

The works from Alicja Kwade's students at the Dresden University of Fine Arts (HfbK) will be presented at Grisebach in Berlin. The show’s poetic title serves as a multi-layered metaphor. It bespeaks the inexorable course of time and the never-ending flux of movement that can leave traces which are either fleeting or long-lasting and formative. It alludes to the memories that accompany and shape us while events relentlessly continue to roll by – both in a social and historical context as well as in a deeply personal sense.

Clouds of None strives to bring us closer to that original state, conception, and nexus at which the creative artistic process originates – indistinct, nearly shapeless, yet filled with opportunity. It is this wellspring of all artistic endeavor that also informs Alicja Kwade’s class. For three years now, the internationally renowned artist has been teaching three-dimensional artistic practice at the Dresden University of Fine Arts. She and her students have chosen to focus on unlocking the potential of free-flowing thoughts, allowing images to arise that give material form to the ephemeral, fixing it in works of art and thus entering into a dialogue with the outside world.

The interests and approaches which the students bring to the table are diverse, just like the various media in which they choose to experiment and express themselves. With their installations, two-dimensional or filmic works, they investigate such topics as the nature of objects or explore the various processes underlying systems of production. In one exhibit, for example, we see shards of glass bolted together into curving shapes that seem to emerge from the floor, alluding to the interplay of fragility and cohesion while triggering a chain of associations that ultimately touches on philosophical enquiry. In another space, we are confronted with objects that seem to be stones; on closer examination, their industrial markings reveal them to be animal skins. Or we see stylized motifs from nature that appear to be executed as traditional embroidery patterns but in fact have been chiseled into concrete walls, delineating the built structure. A further exhibit showcases the role played by memories and the manner in which the past manifests itself. Dreams, too, play a part, and are explored in surreal, narrative settings that actually can be entered physically by the visitor

The Clouds of None exhibition is a poetically inspired endeavor to pin down the transience of abstract ideas and fragile moments before they vanish forever.
